"The Invitation"
1973
Directed by Claude Goretta
This charming and insightful
comedy takes us to a garden party that begins sedately and falls to pieces
as the sun and alcohol take their toll. The host is Remy Placet, a
mild-mannered, middle-aged bachelor who changes his life dramatically
after his mother's death. He takes a temporary leave from work, buys a
splendid country house outside Geneva, then invites his coworkers to an
all-day housewarming party. Removed from familiar office surroundings, and
intimidated by the luxurious villa, the guests gradually let down their
reserve. "One of the most impressive works to come out of
Switzerland" (James Monaco, The Movie Guide). Cannes Film
Festival, Special Citation. Starring Jean-Luc Bideau, Francois Simon and
Jean Champion. Digitally mastered with new electronic
subtitles. French with English subtitles.
Switzerland/France.
100 minutes.
