"Hey Babu Riba"
1987
Directed by Jovan Acin
Pop,
Glenn, Sacha and Kicha are four vivacious and impetuous teenage boys coming
of age in Belgrade, 1953. All four are mad about Glenn Miller, the sport of
rowing, American blue jeans, and Mariana; their comely, ethereal rowing
captain whom they've nicknamed Esther after movie star Esther Williams. But
suddenly, the powerful bond that links the five friends must grow even
stronger as together they endure their families' suffering and sacrifices in
the wake of communism. And when the boys decide to risk everything to help
their beloved Esther, it drastically changes the course of their lives
forever. "A magic that is
special to movies alone. The greatest pleasure in the world is to walk into a movie you
never heard of, by a director you never heard of, and then be overwhelmed by beauty and
memory and longing," wrote The New York Post. Hey Babu Riba was
the sleeper hit of the London, Miami, Seattle and San Francisco Film Festivals. Serbian
with yellow English subtitles.
112 minutes.
