"Ward Six"
1976
Directed by Lucian Pintilie
One of the most
powerful stories by Anton Chekhov receives a masterful film adaptation in the hands of
Lucian Pintilie, one of the world's foremost directors for the stage as well as screen.
The story, set at the turn of the century in a provincial Russian town, concerns a doctor
who oversees a grotesque mental ward. The only person he meets with any comprehension of
life is one of the inmates. The doctor is reported to the authorities by one of the
inmates, is judged mad, and the story's two most humane and intelligent men are locked
together in Ward No. 6. A subtle, powerful film based on one of the great literary works
of Russian literature. Serbian with English subtitles.
