Akira

Japan -  1987

Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo

In this nihilistic view of the future, the famous Akira of comics fame explodes onto the screen in a fusion of art and craft.  Experiments on children with E.S.P. get out of hand, forcing the government to authorize the dropping of an atomic bomb on Tokyo. Rising from the ashes, gigantic Neo-Tokyo faces new perils as the experiments continue.

Requiring over 150,000 cels of animation, Katsuhiro Otomo, widely regarded as the "God of manga", provides a seamless transition from static to animated style.   This is the film that is credited with inspiring the invasion of Japanese animation, or anime, into western culture.  Already regarded as a classic, Akira delivers a powerful story along with the exceptional animation and massive rock soundtrack.

"A remarkable technical achievement in every respect" - Variety

Runtime:  124 Minutes

"akira is the greatest japanimation/anime/ whatever the hell you want to call it that has ever been made and i think that no one in their right mind would disagree- though there are many contestants for the close second. to make a sequel would be such an abomination that it would entirely disrupt the greatness of the original. examples of the case in mind are that of escape from new york, the crow, carrie and other decent movies that were littered and completely overshadowed by the downfall of their shitty sequels."

"It's Not even the Begining"
"Katsuhiro Otomo is simply the hardest working, most talented and original man in sequential art.  He is nothing short of genius. Anything and everything that can be said cannot even begin to explain the quality of his work. Both the graphical part and the narrative part.  He is a true god. He infuses into his work every and all details of the problems and questions of human existence, from the most trite and regional to the most  deep and universal difficultly. His taste for cinematography is elegantly, effectively graceful.  Only under him and Phillip K. Dick's careful guidance, science fiction has been given the chance to show its true maturity.
After Akira (which in manga form alone is formidably admirable, penned from 1982 'till 1993) he did other films including a film version of Memories, he is currently developing Steam Boy for BANDAI using 3 billion yen and sophisticated Computer Graphics.  "Time hurts"

"SATORI is all that I can say. Not only a graphical masterpiece, but also a mindbogglin' storyline. One has to have seen the movie at least twice to fully understand it's morale."

From:  "sull"

"Akira is the shit! fuck all....it conveys a message to rise against all the fucked up shit that the government does and fuck it all up... it's a wake up call to experimentation to LSD and that even the government trips"

From:  "flush"

"Cyberpunk is da shit!","Oh yes, this movie is the best anime ever created. It's not for nothing that Katsuhiro Otomo is called the god of manga. This movie has such a high amount of speed in it, it is very cool. Perfect created characters, not the averagehero vs. bad guy movie!   Oh and that soundtrack is very very cool! Especially dolls polyphony.  But there's one thing: The book is much much much better! The book is more dramatic and much longer, it doesn't end when Kaneda and Kai find Akira (who is a real boy in the book). It actually just starts then! Every selfrespecting otaku should have read it!! "
