Spain - 1981
Directed by Carlos Saura
Flamenco dancers are preparing for a full dress rehearsal of The Blood
Wedding in this "behind-the-scenes" view of Flamenco. We did not know
that Flamenco dancing was so ballet-like, in this case, telling a timeless story of love
and betrayal. The music is exotic and Cristina Hoyos, dancing her role as the
"bride", is compelling to watch.
We enjoyed this film immensely. While it feels like a documentary,
featuring interviews with the dancers, the film is really more than that. The
director, Carlos Saura, captures the drama and scope of this tradition in a way that is
similar to live theater.
