An artfully crafted film dealing with the neo-Nazi subculture in Melbourne. Knee-jerk reactions from critics were to criticize this film for "glamorizing violence". We did not find this to be so. We found the characters to be presented in an appropriate context, that is to say - they were vulgar.
Blind loyalty is the subject most closely examined here as we watch angst-ridden, "proud-to-be-ignorant", skinhead youths hop onto the neo-Nazi bandwagon. They babble on and on about "white power" and target Vietnamese immigrants as the focus of their hate. True, many scenes are disgustingly violent, just as they should be. There is no way to make these kind of thugs pretty. The only character that illicits sympathy is that of Gabe, a young woman suffering from epilepsy who has been fending off the constant sexual advances of her father. The gang begins to deteriorate as alliances are strained and tested by Gabe's arrival. She drifts from the gang's leader to his best friend, numbed by her own self-loathing.
We felt the director used his resources well, the original musical score by John Clifford White supported the film throughout and the "grey-tone" photography added a rich gritty texture. Russel Crowe was awarded the AFC Award (Australian Film Critics Awards, 1992) for Best Actor as well as the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Actor (Seattle International Film Festival, 1993) for his icy portrayal of Hondo, the gangs' leader. Jacqueline McKenzie won a Best Actress award from the Stockholm Film Festival (1992) for her performance as Gabe.

"I'm amazed and appauled by all the actual skinheads that commented here. My interpretation of the movie was a intellectual piece on the futility and self-destructiveness of racism yet some of you see it as propaganda for your nazi cause. "The final gang battle between the Vietnamese and the nazi skin heads reminded me of war stories from Korea I read as a child. The Vietnamese kept coming and coming more and more while the skinheads heavily outnumbered kept falling back and getting picked off one by one until you wondered it anyone would survive. I did however find the Vietnamese to be alot more sympathetic then the ccf. "

Thus far, it has been my policy to post any opinion. I didn't want to shift from that policy merely because of an expressed ignorance. Perhaps "auSSie88" should consider what the Aboriginal people of Australia would think of the invasion of "non-whites" that he refers to. I don't think that the Aboriginal people would see the "invaders" as "non-whites". If "auSSie88" would like to experience what the sting of racism must feel like, perhaps he could meet up with someone who would refer to the gene pool from which he sprung as "defective". "The film was both interesting and entertaining. Although I do not agree with the
views of the skins and think that it gives uneducated audiences fuel to link all skins to
racism - the film was very much needed. I would hope that a positive movie about skinheads

"Skinhead Skinheads Skinheads Fuck U. For me this is one of the films that you have to see, just to help you to try and understand the mentality of racist white supremists. Russell Crowe plays Hando, the leader of a group of Australian skinheads who take out their racism on the Chinese throughout the film. Crowe is outstanding in one of his more grittier roles, and he is backed up with a believable supporting cast. Many scenes of gratuitous violence in the film, help to portray the shocking reality of racial tension around the world. A great film and not to be missed!"

on import. For me the film represents the alienation, felt by most whites in urban areas
and created by blurred-vision governments, which forces whites to seek unity to fight

that the film is supposed to represent how self-destructive racism is. That is a very
shallow analysis in its concept because for one, in the film it isn't racism that destroys
them but the intrusion of Gabe, a foreign body from the Skin-Head culture, within their
little group and her treason. Secondly, saying that racism is self-destructive is an easy
analysis to make since the term ""racism"" is by definition negative
so most people would accept: ""yeah..racism...bad...self-destructive..."
One could turn the table round and say that it is the will to save their people
(forget the term race for a moment as it is also, wrongly, perceived negatively by most
people) that drives them to fight. Would you call the fight for liberty self-destructive?
Writing an essay where you will just state the obvious to the marker will not get
you a good mark (unless you're studying at a Polytechnic in the UK), try thinking of the
reasons driving Hando and his boys to do the things they do. Did the devil give them the
""spell of racism"" that turns them into monsters? Do they have
a political point at all?"

"There are some interesting views and comments on your page. I, like
""Emily"", am researching an essay on Romper, of course it's going to
mention racism, it's unavoidable given the film's context. What I really want to get to
grips with are audiences reactions to this film, how they respond to the films violent
depiction of racial issues and who/what they identify as protagonist, villain and overall
message, and why?.

"I am doing an assignment on Romper Stomper for a subject called Culture in
Australia. I believe the movie says indirectly alot about australian culture. As a race we
have always made the most of what we have, in the movie the skinheads use an old workshop
as their home. The skinheads protect the women in the film and bubs, when they go the get
the asians they tell the girls and bubs to stay. Protecting women and children has always
been part of australian history, part of australian people. Skinheads are all loyal to
each other in the film, this is another quality that we pride our selves on. I believe
that the film recognises that the white people took the land from aboriginals and now

I'm more inclined to agree with the latter.The fact that this movie can give two opposing messages is certainly a reflection on how clever this movie is. Any movie that makes a person think-really THINK- has got my vote as a good movie. As for all the comments I've read, I think they're all valid viewpoints because they are someone's own truths. "I was struck by the small intelligence of most of the movies
commentators. I was glad to see that there were some comments by people who
realised that the movie was certainly Not For 'Racists' or Skinheads.
I was searching the web to find the end theme song from the movie when I
stumbled apon this site. I find it incredible, though not surprising, that such
beleifs still exist.
I cheer to all that 'I am the Frank' said. I also could not get over the disgust
I felt at my own past transgressions. I once did hang around with some skin
heads. I wanted to know what made them tick, and got sucked in...not by their
hatred, but by their weakness. Thankfully I could no longer stand their
