A classic gangster movie set in 1930's Shanghai.
The story of a young woman's position as the girlfriend to a gangland "boss" and
a young country boy who is sent to the city to work for his gangster uncle.
The young boy is given the job
of caring for her. The
girlfriend, played by Gong Li, is as superficial and greedy as any American gun
moll, but her attitude is softened by the young boy's innocence.
Filmed on location in Shanghai, Zhang Yimou received a Golden Palm
nomination from the Cannes Film Festival (1995). The film was nominated for an Oscar
for Best Cinematography(1996), and won both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and

a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film - China (1995).
