Set in 1942 Czechoslovakia, Tono (Jozef Kroner) is appointed the
"Aryan Controller" of a Jewish owned business that has been seized from an
elderly Jewish woman. Because of her senility, the woman is oblivious to events
taking place around her. She believes Tono to be her newly appointed
"assistant". Tono's dilemma, is to reconcile his chance
for
advancement with his self-loathing at having any part of the nasty business.
It is interesting to note that this film was made after the
Soviets took control of Czechoslovakia in 1962. The old lady referred to
"pogroms", a subject that we thought the Soviets would have repressed during the
60's.
Ida Kaminsk received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (1967)
in her role as Rozalie Lautmann, the elderly Jewish woman, and both Ida Kaminsk
and Jozef Kroner won Special Mention for their acting performances at the Cannes Film
Festival (1965). The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language
Film-Czechoslovakia (1966).
Runtime: 128 minutes
