Scotland - 1996
Directed by Danny Boyle
Mark "Rents" Renton (Ewan McGregor) is the principle character in this gritty
tale about the life of a heroin addict in Edinburgh. Renton's friends are all in
various stages of self-destruction and he is torn between the notion of straightening
himself out and getting his next fix. The angst-driven root of addiction is more
closely explored than in any film since Christine F. The
personalities of Renton and his friends seem real and complex, not just the usual idiots
that we are accustomed to seeing as addicts. These idiots are sometimes witty and
adorable, but still idiots, and Renton knows this.
The "hand-held" feel of the cinematography give the
film its quick pace and frantic "rush" feeling. Excellent casting and
well-crafted dialogue give the characters life and vibrancy. The graphic details
involved in portraying the street life are not pleasant and may not be easy to take for
some viewers.
Trainspotting won the Best Film Award from the Boston Society of Film
Critics (1996). Danny Boyle won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Director from
the Seattle International Film Festival (1996). John Hodge was nominated for an
Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (1997).
Other nominations received were: for Danny Boyle, an Independent Spirit Award (1997)
and for Ewan McGregor for an MTV Movie Award (1997).

"This movie is one of the greatest of all time. What drama,
what insight into a persons soul, what a beating Begbie dishes out. Rent this, buy it, do
whatever but dont miss this movie. If you cant stomach graphic scenes and violence, then
you are probably a self-deluding bible thumper who cant handle the real world, go rent
sleepless in seattle or something, this isnt your movie. But if you want a movie that
could change the way you think. Dont miss out on Trainspotting."
