A man's faith is tested as he seeks revenge against the men who brutally raped
and murdered his daughter. Set in 14th Century Sweden, this fairy-tale like story is
based on a Swedish legend. The sets and costumes are excellent, reflecting Bergman's
famous attention to detail. In one particularly powerful scene, the father of the
victim (Max von Sydow), venting his rage, pits himself against a living birch tree,
eventually bringing it down. Classic Bergman.
The Virgin Spring won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (1961)
and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film (tied with La Verite,
1960). The film also received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design,
Black-and-White (1961). Ingmar Bergman won Special Mention at the Cannes Film
Festival for directing The Virgin Spring (1960).
